The Surti Leva Patidar Samaj of Southern California was initiated in 1981, to promote Social, Cultural and Religious activities for Leva Patidars throughout Southern California. The idea of forming this organization primarily came from some dedicated community members on a Volleyball Sports Ground. In 1985, we were one of the first Samaj's in the United States, to purchase our own hall, thus providing a place of gathering for the benefit and betterment of our community.
Throughout the years, our goals have not changed. We hava a strong membership base. We hold annual religious programs such as Maha Shivratri, Janmastami, and Ram Navami, we have great Navratri Raas / Garbas each year, and we operate a Gujarati School on Saturdays (Vividh Kendra) for children ages 5 to 15. We not only provide for ourselves, we also come together when other Indian Communities are in need. In 2000, our Samaj raised over $51,000.00 to help those affected during the 2000 Earthquake in Bhuj, India.
As our organization continues to grow, it's important that we remember those that dedicated their valuable time and efforts in creating this organization for our community. It's equally important that we continue the tradition of having a strong community, by attending Samaj events and by coming together in good times and bad. After all, the main goal for creating this organization was to promote Social, Cultural and Religious activities for all of us here in Southern California. |
